Our Haitian Pastors
On his maiden voyage to the Americas Columbus landed on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola in 1492. French pirates later used the island as a destination from which to attack English and Spanish ships. Spain ceded the western third of the island to France in 1697. In 1804 slaves on the island fought against the French to gain their independence and named the country Haiti.
Today, Haiti has over seven million people and is the most densely populated and economically poor nation in the Western Hemisphere. Haiti shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. Two-thirds of the country is rough mountainous terrain. Most Haitians are of African descent and a majority live in rural areas.
The official language of Haiti is French Creole. Less than 30 percent of the people consider themself Christian and over half of the population practice the Voodoo religion in some form.
Haiti has been in the news frequently because of its political instability, natural disasters and economic uncertainty. After the 7.1 magnitude earthquake ravaged the capital and its surrounding cities killing an estimated 200,000 people many of the survivors continue to live under makeshift tents.
Despite this, A Brighter Day Ministries continue to make inroads into the lives of the Haitian people in the Central Plateau.
